I liken it to this: I can watch a football game with some intelligence but if you were to put me on the field facing a defensive line, I’d have no clue what to do after the snap. So it is with too many of our children. They know the three answers to most children’s sermon questions: Jesus, God and love. They know about Biblical characters and stories but put them in college, facing a “defensive line” of temptations and choices and they have no clue what to do other than what the moment tells them they “feel” right about. This was the passion behind my first book “Habits of a Child’s Heart: Raising Your Kids with the Spiritual Disciplines” (co-authored, NavPress 2004).
